A never-before-seen look inside the history and evolution of underground dance music and rave culture, the WHITE LABEL documentary series steps back through the decades and then brings us up to speed on the how and the why of present day EDM.

WHITE LABEL explores the USA and the international locations known as hot spots for the evolution of underground rave culture to mainstream EDM.

Our first Limited Series, starting off in the metropolis of New York, investigates the influence of Manhattan’s clubs and the warehouse raves and outlaw parties happening in the boroughs on the rise of EDM as a mainstream music culture that is now one of the Top 4 largest music scenes. Dance music grew organically across cultures, with a DIY vibe and an “all means necessary” attitude.

slide 2 background.jpg
broken record.png
reverse-PreviewsFlat__0005_Layer-29_edited.png

So, how did this upstart renegade music movement with no mainstream market grow to revolutionize global pop culture and establish the DJ as a viable superstar on stages across the globe?

Listen to stories from dozens of DJs, Music Producers, Promoters, Event organizers, Club owners, Record label & Record Store pioneers alongside freshly digitized clips of never-before- seen footage from insider archives.

Before there was market for Dance Music, these first movers sacrificed for the culture.
Family who didn’t get it, relationships that didn’t last, criminal saboteurs and law enforcement raids... yet amidst all the very real drama they believed in the culture enough to grow tentpole companies by organizing events, establishing record stores and distributing music, and above all... dancing all night long!

Dance connects us all, the music hits and we leave the oppressive forces of society that segregate us. Dance includes everyone on the floor, connecting people in a shared joy of rhythm and expression. Youth who needed to escape the monotonous suburbs or the urban jungles, who needed to break down the false walls, found their freedom in the rave.

A note from Rosa Costanza, project creator:

“I grew up in the Hudson Valley, so I would take the Metro North train to Grand Central Station and find my friends at the clubhouses of the culture - the record stores and lifestyle shops. I was paid to hand out flyers for a lighting company, dropping them off at the fashion houses like Patricia Fields and Liquid Sky.

This culture saved me from the destructive forces around me in upstate NY. This documentary is my homage, my love letter back to the music community that shaped my youth and saved my life. My 4x Episode Limited Series on NY is setup to showcase maximum art alongside the storytelling: the psychedelic flyers, the DIY fashions people wore, lighting shows in the events and party venues whether super clubs or warehouse raves.”

4x NYC Episode Synopsis

Episode 1 – Background of Rave culture and popularized EDM culture is discussed as a way to introduce audiences to the scope of the scene. Where did Rave culture emerge from in NYC? Who was first-moving in this culture and what did they do to contribute to its growth in the early stages? Character introductions: Highlight the specific fields: Music Producers, DJs, Record Labels, Record Store & Club Owners, Promoters, etc… Explore the NYC & London/ UK connection that grew RAVING.

Episode 2 – Growth of the new jockeys of the sound: music producers and DJ talents alongside party impresarios and promoters, access to new digital music technology, new clubs/ party platforms for DJs to reach the audiences. Highlighting the most popular parties and personalities from the early days, to show who made what popular club tracks blow up what popular club nights, such as Disco 2000 at the Limelight, or warehouse raves like Storm Rave. Tease out more of the conflicts.

Episode 3 - Trauma & Drama in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s that impacted the scene. Fighting amongst the party promoters, a clash to grab growing audiences, drug dealers and drug deaths, the Michael Alig club kid murder-dismemberment tragedy that shocked the scene, Rudy Giuliani and his Cabaret Law to shut down dancefloors, etc… then 9-11 happened and dealt a huge blow to the NYC community.

Episode 4 – Resurgence as the Rave scene pulls apart from the NYC Club scene, the split of cultures from what was once unified as the EDM culture grew into big festivals. What happened to the purity and unity of this inclusive RAVE utopia as commercial forces took hold? How did the culture come back from stumbling in the late 1990’s, after 9-11, and what happened in the 2000’s? New music styles like Electroclash. The iconic NYC continues to fuel global Dance Music culture with massive pop stars like Lady Gaga, but does NYC ever really find its footing again?

WHITE LABEL SOCIAL IMPACT + VISION

There is currently nothing like WHITE LABEL on TV or streaming platforms, no program which captures the scope of rave/ dance music history and cultural progression in this way: as a shared community voice that highlights many talents who fostered the scene.

Social impact outreach in our marketing and social campaigns is important to amplify the core values of rave culture discussed in the WHITE LABEL documentary series.

Our series highlights testimony from interviewees who promote the social consciousness and positive prosocial aspects of being on the dance floor, enjoying the music and movement together, that helped to create the PLUR environment of Rave/ EDM culture: Peace. Love. Unity. Respect.

IMG_0025.2.jpg

Music for Outreach:
Soundtrack, Playlists, Events

WHITE LABEL seeks to promote a forward focused and renegade attitude of dance music as a global youth culture, and seeks to achieve this authentically by carefully attaching music soundtrack talent that can raise the caliber of the TV series.

WHITE LABEL is a multi-media venture built upon a cross-sector IP/ brand platform that includes the Soundtrack media, with proposed music videos for Original Score/ Soundtrack releases as Singles and DJ Mixtape style playlists, as well as Events featuring the DJs and Music Producers included on the Soundtrack and featured in the documentary.

WHITE LABEL 's objective is to communicate the core of electronic music inception and evolution, and close the gap between the early 90’s rave scene and the current

electronic dance music (EDM) scene in order to position WHITE LABEL as a must-see Docu-Series with a must-hear soundtrack of the global dance music community.
